TeleDevelopment Services, Inc. (TDS) held its 5th Annual Call Center & BPO Training Convention 2011 entitled The Web Effect at The New World Hotel in Makati City on February 22-23. More than 200 delegates attended this year’s 2 day convention that featured topics on talent development, relevance of technology and social networking to training and hiring, and more.

The 1st day started with a bang as TDS trainers facilitated an Algorithm exercise for the opening activity. Guests were warmly welcomed by none other than TDS President, Mr. Jon Kaplan. Keynote speakers Jerry Durant, Chairman Emeritus of the International Institute for Outsource Management (IIOM) and Gerardo “Gerry’ Plana, Executive Director of People Management Association of the Philippines (PMAP) started day one with a very inspiring talk on “Web Effect” and “Inspirational Leadership: Best Practices in the Investors in People Standard.” The sumptuous buffet lunch was followed by an afternoon filled with highly informative sessions on e-learning, competency-based / targeted selection, benefits of a learning management system, and project management, and more. Notable names from the BPO industry, private organizations, as well as the Academe and other industries were on-hand to share their knowledge and expertise. The breakout sessions in the afternoon, aptly called “threads”, showcased more interesting and informative topics like “Reconfiguring Targeted Talent Management for the Philippine BPO Landscape,” by Dean Rosalina Ora’a Fuentes of Southeast Asia Interdisciplinary Institute (SAIDI), “How OD Can Successfully Manage Fast-Paced, Simultaneous Changes to Propel You Ahead of the Competition, ” by Sheldon D’ Souza, Intelenet Global Services’ Director for Organizational Development and Training; “The Anatomy of Operational Excellence,” by CyberCity Teleservices VP, Linda Chando; and “Igniting Learning and Development at the Heart of Strategic Alliances,” by President and CEO of WNS Philippines, Prabhakar Bisen, to name a few.

The second day offered more learning and networking opportunities. The participants were led by no other than Jesse Rebustillo, president of Philippine Society for Training and Development, in the “Idea Networking” activity where everyone had the opportunity to meet other participants and share ideas about social networking and training and other topics. The whole day was filled with plenary sessions and panel discussions where participants had the opportunity to ask questions and share their thoughts with reputable panelists like Regina Hechanova-Alampay, Executive Director of Ateneo CORD, Karthikeyen Subburaman, Country Manager of ECC International, and more.

Strategic Partners: Business Processing Association Phils. (BPAP), Commission on Information and Communications Technology, Philippine Society for Training & Dev’l (PSTD), People Management Association of the Philippines, (PMAP); co-presentors: Pearson and Versant, inContact, and The Call Center School; sponsors – Cebu Pacific Air, Team Asia, American Technologies, Inc (ATI), Fuji Xerox, PLDT, Robinsons Land, SAP, Ynzal, and all the media partners have helped make this event a success. Congratulations to TeleDevelopment Services, Inc. for another fruitful and worthwhile event. With the success of this year’s convention, more and more people are now looking forward to TDS’ 6th Annual BPO and Call Center Training Convention next year.

What did the award mean to you and to your organization?

The BPO Training Manager Excellence Award means 2 things to me and Aegis PeopleSupport.

First, it is a recognition for the initiatives that the APS training team came up with four years ago. Through the University Linkages Program, we have built strong partnerships, not just with top academic sources, but also with our top academic sources in the Philippines.

Second, it serves as an added motivation for APS to pursue more academic linkages as we move forward, and open additional opportunities for the Filipino worker through corporate training and development. Now that the competition, in terms of industry partnerships, is getting tougher; it pushes us to initiate new programs for the academe and our near-hires.

How did you feel when you got the award?

I felt thankful. Very thankful.

I was not expecting it at first. Though I was aware that my nomination was valid, I did not look at it as something as competitive as the other nominations. In 2010, the University Linkages and the Aspire Near-hire Programs are but usual training programs that we have in the industry. I was sure that there are more competitive nominees vying for the award. That is why I didn’t prepare a speech. God really knows how to surprise people.

When my name was called, I was speechless. I tried to outline my speech as I walked up the stage, but it was useless. When I got hold of the trophy, that was only when I finally realized what the award was all about. It’s about the industry giving back the training and educational field the recognition it deserves. Training means quality, but it also means results. The University Linkages and Aspire Near-hire Training Programs have produced more than modest results that support employment to Filipinos and advanced specific trainings for our academic partners.

How did your organization benefit from it?

After the recognition, we immediately had a line up of possible academic and government organizations ready to partner with us. Aegis PeopleSupport started to further widen its network of potential academic and training sources that supported our recruitment and training needs. In a highly competitive industry, the award served it purpose as an additional brand, and provided APS with a certain level of corporate pride.

Were there any challenges before and after? What were they?

Like any other training groups, of course there were challenges. Lack of manpower and external support were limited back then. But it was through these challenges that our team learned how to improvise and create initiatives to make our training programs better.

With a certain level of pride, also comes a certain level of expectation. Even after the award was given, the challenges still continued to come in. Partners started to demand, and trainings became less keen at times. But as managers, we must see these challenges as opportunities to better our current processes. In these changing times, it is important to initiate positive changes that will affect, not only our training results and targets, but also our trainers’ esteem and academic competence.

Is there anything new you’re working on?

Yes. Currently, I’m starting to join the bandwagon of English trainers and teachers advocating the call for Multilingual Education in the Philippines. The view of learning English through proper integration of the 1st Language as a recurring medium of instruction can play an important role to speed up target language learning through a ladderized approach. Further, in this generation of available call center jobs and the immediate need for proficient second language speakers, a deep sense of nationalism should not be set aside for the learning of a 2nd Language.

Also, as the current Manager for Training and Delivery in Aegis PeopleSupport, I am working with BPAP in the rollouts of the Advanced English Pre-employment Training (AdEPT), where I am a Master Trainer, for college professors in the Philippines.

Lastly, I am trying to push for a paper on Intercultural Communicative Competency for Call Center Training. This relatively new approach in training for the workplace is an innovative look at how we can further enhance competence in English, especially in the global setting.

Few inspirational tips to those who would like to someday be recognized, as well.

Just one: passion. If we only have enough love for education and see it as a key to help Filipinos get jobs, we are on the right track.

Trainers, Training Managers, and Training Directors only need to be passionate in what they’re doing. It may sound too cheesy, but we all know it’s true. I act passionately whenever I train teachers and learners. I manage people with the needed passion because I love my work. I stand for what is right, and I get the results that I wanted.

If you’d only continue your passion in teaching and training the Filipino worker, rest assured that one day, your results will be recognized; your efforts – awarded.

Promote the BTE to organizations and nominees.

The BPO Training Excellence Award is a great initiative that gives recognition to various training innovations in our industry. It sets a higher benchmark among training groups in the BPO and encourages the industry to enhance and concretize its available training programs so they achieve more competitive targets and can gather more favorable results.

By joining the BTE, you do not only add value to your training programs, but also provide additional motivation for your trainers and training managers.

Ms. Vita Marie P. Viajar
BPO Trainer Excellence Award, 2010
Integra Business Processing Solutions Inc.

To me, the BTE Trainer Excellence Award was a testament of every trainers’ hard work, our Company’s commitment to training personnel – the accolade of a highly-regarded training consultation and recognition organization. It came as a complete surprise to me when I was recognized with the award. The award was not mine, alone. The award rightfully belonged to my fellow trainers in Integra too, as they helped made me the trainer professional that I am today.

The award helped pave the way for our company’s brand of global training paradigm to the entire organization and affiliate companies (American General). With the recognition, the recommendation for the paradigm shift became much easier, welcomingly advancing the development of the communication timeline to now instead of later.

Equally, there will always be challenges to training excellence. This is the reason we continuously seek methods of improving training processes and upgrading standards. In a nut shell, change management (at any level: be it personal, team, or corporate level) is the sum of all these challenges. And this is something I’m also currently working on — having been identified as a Trainer who can be tasked to lead change and revitalize the change leaders, Integra appointed me last year (2010) to spearhead our Talent Acquisition and Corporate Communications units – management engines for change.

To all Trainers, Mentors, Coaches and the like, my message is short and sweet — work hard and work honest. You can never go wrong with good old-fashioned hard work and honest living. Also, never be complacent and always take the extra mile to find ways to improve yourself. Nobody’s perfect but it is an aim we should all strive for.

The BTE Awards represent the single, most dedicated and focal awards body for the most diverse and innovative assembly of trainers – all of us training professionals in the BPO industry – ever established to promote training excellence in the Philippines on the global scene. The BPO Trainer is a breed apart, a champion of legacy, and a change leader. We are exemplars of innovation in a growing business world rife with changes. Bring recognition to your trade. Collaborate, work together, and grow. Be part of the BPO Training Excellence Awards.

Major corporations in the US and Europe are outsourcing their back office operations off-shore to save costs. Even if these jobs are usually not directly IT-related, their data-based orientation often means that they require IT departmental support to be successfully outsourced.

Knowledge Processing Outsourcing (popularly known as a KPO), calls for the application of specialized pertinent knowledge of a high level. KPO business entities provide typical domain-based processes, advanced analytical skills and business expertise, and not just process expertise. The KPO Industry is handling more highly-skilled work than the BPO Industry. While KPO derives its strength from the depth of knowledge, experience and judgment factor; BPO in contrast is more about size, volume and efficiency. Some claim that KPO is the next step extension of Business Processing Outsourcing (BPO) since the BPO Industry is shaping into Knowledge Process Outsourcing because of its favorable advantages and future scope. This should not be considered so, because knowledge process can be defined as high added value processes where the achievement of objectives is highly dependent on the skills, domain knowledge and experience of the people carrying out the activity. And once this activity gets outsourced a new business activity emerges, ergo Knowledge Process Outsourcing.

The success achieved by many overseas companies in outsourcing business process has encouraged many of the said companies to start outsourcing their high-end knowledge work as well. Cost savings, operational efficiencies, availability of and access to a highly skilled and talented workforce are all underlying expectations from Asia’s populace. And to be abreast with the continuously changing times TeleDevelopment Services, Inc. hails its newest business unit, expanding services from the Call Center Industry to specialized BPO and KPO clientele.

The three hi-powered, hard working BPO/KPO business unit team, namely Ian, Kate and Vince are now tackling the enormous tasks of selecting, testing, interviewing and endorsing the right personnel needed by the industry. They work closely with client representatives and are hard at work from dusk till dawn, proving that “Anything worth doing is worth doing well.” In line with these additions in the Philippines, TeleDevelopment’s US office has added consultants, Mamie and Lorraine, to support operations for the ever growing need of the BPO Industry. As the industry continues to change and grow, TeleDevelopment is also continuing its support and service.
